- What is Sexism?

Sexism or gender discrimination is prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex or gender. These can usually be influenced by streotypical gender roles.

 

- Two examples of Sexism

 Examples of sexism are usually in Work or finding jobs. Women in some places are paid less than men. Also sexism can take place at birth as well, as in some countries Boys are more valuable than Girls, as they pass on there family name. At the end of the day both genders are as equal as each other.

 

- UK laws on prejudice and discrimination on sexism?

 Nowadays in the UK, laws on what gender issues have changed over the past years. Although gender equality still occurs today, it has been cut down by new laws, like the 1975- Sex discrimination act, which made it illegal to allow a job to someone on the basis of their gender. Another law that was pass, was the 1928- Electoral reform act- which gave a chance for all women over 21 to vote.

In the last 100 years, women have had more freedom and choice. In the ancient law book, written in about 300BC, it states that " A women does not need to have money of her own, since she is supported by her father before marriage, husband after marriage, and her sons in her old age", However this has been updated allowing women to do more. In hinduism, some hindus believe that Women should look up to sita, agood cook and help raise their children. Some hindus also believe that a unmarried Women has not fufilled her dharma

 

- Examples of gender discrimination in recent media stories.

 

Recently in the news, there was this story, where Norway was convicted of gender discrimination in the USA, as a women was paid far less than Men working at the time. The women recieved her additional money, and spoke of how she had emotional strains of not getting the amount she was working for. Also in Lebanon Female journalists protested that they weren't getting equal pay.
